AREA ACTIVITIES Area Attractions: The Tower of Hercules - Situated on the northen extreme of the Peninsular of La coruna, about 1.6 Kilometers from the town centre. It is the most ancient, illustrio us and representative monument of La Coruna and a principal element of its coat of arms. It was built in the II Century AD, in the epoch of the Emperor Trajano and the exterior was restored in the last third of the XVLLL Century. It is the only Roman lighthouse that exist in the world and that continues to accomplish its original function. It is a declared National Monument. The house and museum of Ms. Emilia Pardo Bazan - Situated in the street called "Tabernas", it is a noble XVIII Century mansion, which was the home of this author, who was an important liter ary figure in the Spanish XIX Century. It is the headquarters of the G alician Royal Academy. Opening hours: from Monday to Friday, except on Public Holidays, from 10.00 to 12.00 and during the month of August, from 10.00 to 13.00. The town Hall - Situated in the Plaza de Marýa Pita, with its characteristic galleries and arcades. A large and elegant building dating from the beginning o f the century. It has a decorated facade and three domed towers. It ha s an artistically decorated council meeting chamber. Square and Convent of "SAnta B?rbara" - Founded in the second half of the XV Century, in an ancient hermitage dedicated to this Saint. It is a Cloistered_Convent of Nuns of the Ord er of Saint Claire and was enlarged in the XVII and XVII Centuries. Th e square is of singular beauty. It has Medievalreliefs over the entran ce. It is a declared Historical-Artistic Monument. Puertas del Mar - These are entrances in different parts of the old XV Century walls. Th e "Puerta de San Miguel" from the XVI Century and the "Clavo del Cruz" from the XVIII Century. They are a declared to be a Historical-Artisti c Group.
